COMPTON, Calif. – Since opening in 1988, Swan Fence, Inc., a Los Angeles chain link producer, has steadily developed its business niche to include unique and unusual wire fence products that the founders did not imagine when they started out. Originally a weaver of only galvanized chain link fabric, Swan now manufactures fused bonded and extruded bonded PVC coated chain link in a variety of colors and sizes, as well as many other types. Swan president Barney Hatake and general manager Jun Ando originally were employees of the parent company, Koiwa, the largest chain link manufacture in Japan. Hatake was given the responsibility of establishing a manufacturing plant in the United States, and set out to look for a suitable location. He scouted sites in Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco before setting on Los Angeles. “I felt that Los Angeles offered the best location for growth and expansion, and of course it had the greatest weather,” said Hatake. Swan Fence began with only five employees, two weaving machines, and a 4,000-square-foot building. They named the new company “Swan” after the Japanese city of Shiratori, where Koiwa is located. The name Shiratori means “white bird” or “swan” in Japanese. Starting with just the bare essentials, Hakata and Ando worked to build a customer base. Today, the firm is housed in a 50,000-square-foot building, and has 26 employees, eight weaving machines (including three mini mesh machines), two PVC wire extruders, and machinery for producing fused bonded wire. As well as producing a variety of stock and custom PVC chain link colors, Swan specializes in manufacturing mini mesh. Some of their standard mini mesh sizes are 3/8” and 5/8”, but some less common sizes they offer are 3/4”, 1/2” and even 1/4”. “I never would have imagined years ago that we would be stocking aluminized wire, aluminum wire, or 2-ounce GBW wire, and certainly not stainless steel wire. Now, we commonly weave these materials,” he said.
